Training
If you work with people, then our alcohol awareness training is for you.
Are your clients affected by alcohol? With 1 in 4 adults a hazardous drinker and 1 in 13 dependent on alcohol in the UK today, the probability of being unaffected by problem drinking is slim. Do you and your staff have the knowledge and confidence to intervene effectively with alcohol-related issues? Do you know the facts about sensible drinking and units? Would you be able to signpost someone to help?
alcohol services for the community (asc) offers customised training to raise awareness of alcohol-related issues to professionals working across the county. Our training is fun and interactive and we are not anti alcohol, but promote a sensible approach to drinking. Examples of the types of courses that we offer are listed below.
Booze basics
Boost your knowledge of our nation's favourite drug! This basic alcohol awareness session explores:
- Alcohol facts and myths
- Units, % ABV's and sensible drinking guidelines
- Physical, social and psychological effects of alcohol use and misuse
- Labels for and attitudes to alcohol misuse
With 1 in 13 people currently dependent on alcohol in the UK encountering problem drinkers is a certainty, regardless of profession. Be sure that you know the real facts so that you can cascade this information and make a difference.
Essential for anyone with an interest in alcohol, both personal and professional. We recommend that anyone who has not previously attended preview training attends this session prior to attending any other focus day.
Talking Alcohol - how to raise the subject
An excellent follow-up to 'booze basics'. What do you do if you suspect problem drinking? How do you raise the subject of alcohol with people sensitively and effectively? This session addresses:
- Screening tools
- Taking a brief drinking history
- The basics of the cycle of change
- Signposting for help
Latest figures show that 1 in 4 adults (aged 16-74) in the UK is a hazardous drinker, however, discussing alcohol use can be very difficult. This session aims to give professionals the confidence to raise the subject with their clients/service users and provide a minimal intervention for those wishing to access help. It is recommended that people wishing to attend this session have either had previous alcohol training or attended 'booze basics'.
Moving people towards change
This session takes 'talking alcohol - raising the subject' one step further and focuses on how to conduct a brief motivational interview, including:
- The cycle of change in detail
- Assessing readiness to change
- Motivational interviewing techniques
- Goal setting
- Appropriate intervention and available services
Brief interventions work! The right message given at the right time in the right place by the right person can influence our behaviour, in fact, research shows that brief interventions are particularly effective with hazardous drinkers. This session enables you to enhance your existing skills whilst learning effective interventions for problem drinking.
